— Methodology

How Each Service is Approached

The starting point for any bench job at Balancewright is scope agreement. The service category, what it covers, and the price are established before the case is opened. This prevents the common situation where the final bill differs from the initial estimate because of work carried out without prior discussion.

Each piece is assigned to a single technician for the duration of its service. The record for that piece is written by the same person who worked on it, which ensures the note is specific rather than generic.

For mechanical movements, timing machine readings are taken across five positions after adjustment. For quartz movements, current draw is verified before the replacement cell is fitted. For complication modules, each mechanism — reset-to-zero, clutch engagement, hammer depth, jumper tension — is set and recorded individually before the module is reunited with the base calibre.

— Quartz & Dive Watches

Battery, Seal & Water Resistance Renewal

A same-week service covering quartz cell replacement with the correct chemistry and voltage, full gasket renewal at case back, crown and pushers, and a dry pressure test followed by a condensation check. The circuit is checked for current draw so that a cell drained early is identified rather than replaced again. Case back threads and gasket seats are cleaned before reassembly, which is the step most often skipped elsewhere. Suited to daily-wear quartz pieces, dive watches due for annual seal renewal, and watches that have been opened by a non-specialist.

What Is Covered

  • Replacement cell — correct voltage and chemistry
  • Full gasket set — case back, crown, all pushers
  • Case back thread cleaning and seat inspection
  • Dry pressure test with condensation check
  • Circuit current draw verification
  • Written note on collection

Process Steps

  1. 1Case back removal and gasket seat inspection
  2. 2Current draw check on circuit
  3. 3Cell replacement with correct specification
  4. 4Full gasket renewal, thread cleaning
  5. 5Case back torqued to spec
  6. 6Dry pressure test and condensation check

— Mechanical Complications

Chronograph & Complication Service

Bench work on movements carrying additional mechanisms — chronograph, date, day-date, moon phase or power reserve. The complication module is separated from the base calibre, cleaned and adjusted independently, then reunited and tested through a full function cycle. Reset-to-zero, hammer depth, clutch engagement and jumper tension are each set and recorded. Includes mainspring renewal, gasket replacement and a five-position rate adjustment on the base calibre. Appropriate for pieces where pushers feel inconsistent, hands do not return cleanly, or the date changes outside its window.

What Is Covered

  • Complication module separation and independent service
  • Full function cycle test — reset, clutch, jumper
  • Base calibre mainspring renewal
  • Gasket replacement throughout
  • Five-position rate adjustment on timing machine
  • Rate sheet and function checklist on collection

Process Steps

  1. 1Full disassembly — module separated from base
  2. 2Ultrasonic clean and inspection of all parts
  3. 3Complication adjustment — each parameter set and recorded
  4. 4Base calibre service and mainspring renewal
  5. 5Module reunion and full function cycle testing
  6. 6Five-position timing and documentation

— Collections of Six or More Pieces

Collection Care Programme

An annual arrangement for owners keeping six or more mechanical pieces, structured around scheduled bench visits rather than reactive repair. Covers two full inspections a year per piece, gasket renewal on any watch worn in water, rate checks on a timing machine, winder and storage condition review, and a maintained record for each reference showing service history and parts fitted. Includes collection and return within Penang island and Seberang Perai, and priority scheduling for pieces that stop between visits.

What Is Covered Per Year

  • Two full inspections per piece
  • Gasket renewal — any water-worn piece
  • Rate checks on timing machine
  • Winder and storage review
  • Collection and return within Penang
  • Priority scheduling between visits
  • Bound folder and digital record set

How the Programme Works

— Standards Across All Services

Protocols That Apply to Every Job

Client Piece Accountability

Each piece is logged on arrival and assigned to a single technician. It is not passed between benches or left unaccounted for during the service period.

No Undisclosed Work

Work outside agreed scope requires a separate quote and explicit approval before proceeding. This applies even to minor findings during disassembly.

Written Documentation

Every completed job carries a written record specific to that piece. Parts fitted, test results and any out-of-tolerance findings are all recorded.

Stated Turnaround

Turnaround windows are confirmed at drop-off. If a delay arises, the client is notified before the window closes.
