— Why Balancewright
Six Points That Separate
Documented Bench Work from Routine Repair
What is done, how it is recorded, and what is not done without consent. These are the details that determine whether a service is worth the bench time.

What the Workshop Does Differently
Each point reflects a specific choice about how bench work is conducted, priced and communicated at Balancewright.
Written Record, Not a Receipt
Every completed job comes with a specific written note. It records test pressures reached, parts fitted, rate readings and any finding outside tolerance — not a standard form, but a record of that watch.
Circuit Check Before Cell Replacement
Quartz movements are checked for current draw before the replacement cell is fitted. A circuit fault identified at this stage explains an early-draining battery. Fitting a new cell over a failing circuit is not a repair.
Pressure Test Included, Not Optional
Dry pressure testing and condensation checks are part of every Battery, Seal and Water Resistance Renewal service — at the stated price. The test result is handed over with the watch in writing.
Complication Work Done In-House
Chronograph modules, date mechanisms, moon phase and power reserve complications are handled at the same bench. Work is not forwarded to a third party. The complication module is separated, cleaned and adjusted independently before reunion with the base calibre.
Confirmed Timelines at Drop-Off
Turnaround windows are given at the time of drop-off. Battery and seal work: three to five working days. Complication service: fourteen to twenty-one working days. These are stated before the work begins, not adjusted afterward.
Annual Programme for Collections
Owners of six or more mechanical pieces can arrange a structured annual care programme. Includes two full inspections per piece, gasket renewal, rate checks, collection and return within Penang, and a maintained record set per reference.
— In Depth
Each Benefit, Examined
Expertise Depth
The workshop's head watchmaker carries fourteen years of bench experience across both mechanical and quartz movements, including time at authorised service centres and independent specialists in Kuala Lumpur and Penang before Balancewright opened.
This is not general repair knowledge applied to watches — it is movement-specific knowledge. Calibre families handled at the bench include ETA Valjoux 7750, Sellita SW500, ETA 2836 and 2824, Miyota 9015 and 8215, and Seiko NH35 and NH38. Enquiries for other calibres are assessed individually.
- Fourteen years of movement-specific bench experience
- Complication modules handled in-house, not forwarded
- Each piece handled by one technician throughout its service
- Calibre enquiries outside the standard list assessed individually
Process and Documentation
The documentation process at Balancewright begins before the case is opened. Service category, agreed scope and any pre-existing case or movement condition are noted at drop-off. Findings during disassembly are added as they are observed.
On complication jobs, a rate sheet records timing machine results across five positions. A function checklist records reset-to-zero accuracy, hammer depth, clutch engagement and jumper tension settings. Both are issued at collection alongside the general service note.
- Pre-service condition note before case opening
- Rate sheet and function checklist for complication work
- Pressure test result recorded and handed over in writing
- Collection Care Programme: bound folder and digital record set
Communication and Client Service
Enquiries sent by phone or email are answered within one working day. The response addresses the specific piece and service described — not a general reply directing the sender to bring the watch in for assessment. If the enquiry falls outside current bench scope, this is stated clearly.
For the Collection Care Programme, the client is assigned a named contact who manages scheduling, collection logistics and documentation for the entire programme. This is not a call centre arrangement.
- Response to bench enquiries within one working day
- Out-of-scope work declined rather than accepted and subcontracted
- Named contact for Collection Care clients
- Drop-in visits welcome during workshop hours, no appointment needed for basic service
Value and Pricing
The three service prices — RM 480, RM 2,150 and RM 4,600 per year — cover defined scopes. Items inside the scope are included. Items outside it are quoted separately before any action is taken. This structure removes the common experience of receiving a bill that differs substantially from the initial estimate.
The Collection Care Programme price covers two full inspections per piece per year, gasket renewal on water-worn watches, rate checks, winder and storage review, and collection and return logistics within Penang Island and Seberang Perai. The full scope is set out in writing when the programme begins.
- Fixed pricing within defined service scope
- Additional work quoted before it is carried out
- Collection logistics included in annual programme price
- Pro-rated mid-year entry into the Collection Care Programme

— Distinctive Features
Three Features Not Common in the Market
Bound Collection Record
Programme clients receive a physical bound folder containing the service record for every piece in their collection, updated at each visit. A matching digital set is issued alongside it. This is not a printout — it is a maintained document intended to travel with the collection.
Collection and Return Within Penang
The Collection Care Programme includes pick-up and return of pieces within Penang Island and Seberang Perai. No courier arrangement, no client responsibility for packaging. The workshop handles the logistics as part of the programme price.
Scope Table Provided Before Enquiry
The workshop publishes a scope table showing what is included, what is carried out on request, and what is not performed. This is available before any enquiry is made. It reduces time spent on back-and-forth and allows clients to assess fit without committing first.
